Riffs Riffs Riffs!
I love a good guitar riff, it’s like a bands bread and butter. Without the core foundation being strong to hold everyone together the rest just falls apart.
The first thing I think it’s important to note is that all the music by these guys is recorded written, performed, mixed and mastered by lead singer Adam Owen’s. I think a lot of modern bands, especially when they’re starting out seem to focus on pouring money into studios and unknowingly bankrupt themselves before they even start.
Truth is nothing sounds quite as brilliant as something prepared, cooked and presented than proper DIY band music.
Abdicator have this pure raw energy behind their music with their influences shining through. Their latest single falling down is well paced throughout with the guitar riffs punching through the song helping to carry the rolling drums and bassline forwards. Now I would have loved the vocals to have a bit of a further push just to give them more edge over the music but I can happily put this down to personal preference as nothing is lost in the arrangement of the song. For a song that is over four and a half minutes long (4:35 to be exact), it kept my interest with the guitar part and rhythm cascading over each other like a super massive waterfall of sound.
For me this has all the essence of a classic metal band that is well seasoned and ready to be engulfed by eager ears to anyone who is a fan of Metallica, Nirvana or maybe even muse (without the synths). I can only imagine how grand these arrangements sound live so make sure to get yourself down to the next live gig of theirs and see how well they can translate these anthemic songs into an indie venue.
Both this single and the one previous have been released in anticipation for their debut album which is coming some point next year and I honestly can’t wait to hear it.
Also want to give a shoutout to their song ‘In the jaws of god’ which just sounds huge!
